Nadeem Parmar is an eminent literary person. He has authored five books of poetry, ten novels, andone collection of short stories. He writes in Urdu, English, and Punjabi languages; and his poems are included in several literary anthologies and journals around the world. However, he is popular as a Ghazal writer. His collection of Ghazals,’ “Mere Bagair” in Devnagri script (Hindi), was launched on April 23 by South Asian Literary Society, Canada (SALSOC) at Shanti Niketan, Hindu Mandir in Surrey; and this event was sponsored by Hindi Literary Society.

Acharya Dwivedi, President of SALSOC welcomed the guests and introduced MC- Muhammad A. Malik (VP) who called speakers-Narinder Bhagi, Surinder Kaur Brar, Acharya, Ashok Bhargava, and Krishan Bector to present their views on book. The book was launched amidst loud clapping.

Nadeem’s ghazals are filled with the spiritual fragrance,enveloped in the moonlight of Kafiya, and nicely colored with Radeef. He has described honestly his experiences, hopes, dreams, challenges and struggles of life in poems. No doubt, he has an astounding knowledge of   bahar/meter and musicality of the words. He conveyed his sentiments skillfully with poetic versatility and creative abilities.

His poems speak of his vivid experiences and imagination. He is a brilliant composer of ghazals, and an ardent advocate of peace, love, compassion, religious harmony, and universal brotherhood. Nadeem composed his first poem when he was only 12 years old. His interest in literary activities dates back in his college life in Jalandhar. His actual name is Kulwant Singh, but penname “Nadeem” was given by ustaad Pundit MolaramVafa. He obtained BSc and Degree of Engineering and moved to Canada in 1973.Nadeem learnt Punjabi script from his wife Surjeet Kaur Parmar.

He paid his first visit to his ancestral home (In Pakistan), after sixty years in 2005, and his close attachment with home is amply reflected in some of his poems. Nadeem bridges the gap between traditional and progressive writers with his vibrant language and fresh symbols.

He worked in the CNCP telecommunication department in a managerial position till his retirement;and expressed his sentiments of ‘cold air of racism’ around him there in some ghazals. He reconstructed the reality and contemporaneous with more depth and craftsmanship to voice his belief and concern. His poems are perhaps born,out of the genuine spark of creativity,nostalgic feelings, and awareness of his rich heritage that’s why it will never fade.

Nadeem was honored by the South Asian Literary Society, Canada with the title, “Laurel of Urdu Canada” for his lifelong exemplary contribution to Urdu poetry.
