KELOWNA – Kelowna RCMP have arrested a man in the tragic murder of a female Indo-Canadian security guard who was killed while on duty in the early hours of February 26.
Following an investigation spearheaded by the Kelowna RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, on Tuesday, April 5, the BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second degree murder against 22–year-old Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn of Kelown in the murder of Hardeep Kaur. He has been arrested and is expected to appear next in court on Wednesday, April 6.
On February 26, 2022, the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of an assault that had occurred in one of the buildings on the UBCO campus. A man working at the university had allegedly assaulted a security guard. The security guard later died.
“This has been a difficult few weeks for the community in the aftermath of the tragic events of February 26. The response in support to the woman’s family has been remarkable. I would like to thank the Kelowna Serious Crimes Unit and the first responders for their work to bring this case before the court,” said Insp Beth McAndie Investigative Service Officer for the Kelowna RCMP.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and co-workers at this time. We will continue to provide any support they may need, as we prepare for the upcoming court process,” police said.
Kaur was attacked while working a shift at the Kelowna university campus. The 24-year-old victim was from India who dreamed of bright future in B.C. She received her permanent residency just weeks before she died.
Members of Kaur’s family have said she came to Canada from India in 2015. A spokesperson said she was working at the university to raise money to go back to school, potentially to become a paramedic.
Police said given this matter is now before the court, no further information will be released.
