Police in Burnaby are still searching for a missing South Asian man. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is working in close partnership with the Burnaby RCMP and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) as the search for Masood Masjoody continues. On the evening of February 2, 2026, Burnaby RCMP launched an investigation into the whereabouts of 45-year-old Masood Masjoody after receiving reports from concerned neighbours. Initial investigation by the Burnaby RCMP determined that Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance was out of character and that criminality was involved.

BURNABY – Police in Burnaby are still searching for missing South Asian man.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is working in close partnership with the Burnaby RCMP and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) as the search for Masood Masjoody continues.
On the evening of February 2, 2026, Burnaby RCMP launched an investigation into the whereabouts of 45-year-old Masood Masjoody after receiving reports from concerned neighbours. Initial investigation by the Burnaby RCMP determined that Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance was out of character and that criminality was involved.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance and are calling on those who knew Mr. Masjoody to come forward. At this time, there are no indications to suggest this incident is linked to gangs or extortions.

“We don’t believe Masood’s disappearance was random,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We believe there are family and friends with important information who have yet to speak with us and we are asking them to come forward. It is essential for us to have all the information available to establish a fulsome timeline.”
Investigators released a photo ofMasjoody in order to advance the investigation.
“Mr. Masjoody is known for his online presence and as a mathematician who previously worked in academia,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “A person’s background, lifestyle, and affiliations form a part of every IHIT investigation. As with all cases, it will be taken into consideration when identifying a motive.”
“We are aware of the impact Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance has had on his family, friends, and greater community. As the search efforts continue, investigators are providing updates to family as they become available.”
