TORONTO – A young Indo-Canadian woman was killed Saturday night in what police say was a targeted shooting at a Mississauga gas station.
The victim has been identified as Pawanpreet Kaur, 21, from Brampton.
Police say they were called to the gas station near Creditview Road and Britannia Road around 10:40 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Police said life-saving measures were attempted but the woman died.
“Upon arrival, police located the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds,” police said in a press release. “Life saving measures were attempted, however the victim succumbed to her injuries.”
Police say they believe it was a targeted incident. The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
According to Peel Regional Police, Pawanpreet Kaur was shot repeatedly by her killer.
“We saw the gunman pointing the gun at the head of the victim,” said witness Mark Sandoval. “He was wearing all black.”
Officers are looking for a male suspect, seen wearing dark clothing and gloves.
Several witnesses to the shooting described hearing three to four shots, reported Toronto Sun.
“We saw her fall down and then suddenly the gunman pointed the gun at her head,” said Carmela Sandoval. “We were shocked. It was very traumatic. I cannot sleep from last night.”
Michael Chai and his daughter Kaylee heard the shots Saturday night and gave a statement to police Sunday,
“We heard ‘bang, bang, bang.’ Three loud bangs,” added Michael Chai. At the time, he was about to enter the car wash with his daughter, Kaylee, who thought they were hearing fireworks.
Officers arrived on scene and located a 21-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times,” said Duty-Insp. Tim Nagtegaal. “Medical assistance was given, but the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.”
The woman, police said, was shot outside the gas station. Little information has been provided about a suspect.
“We are not able at this time to state the sex of the suspect, only that it was a party seen leaving – all dark clothing,” said Nagtegaal. “The culprit was seen running from the scene wearing all dark clothing. We believed this to be a targeted shooting.”
He added homicide detectives believe it was a targeted murder based on “the initial information provided by eyewitnesses and other evidence that we’ve uncovered at the scene.”
