SURREY – Surrey Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara president and vocal Khalistan advocate Hardeep Singh Nijjer was murdered in the temple parking lot Sunday evening in a brazen killing that’s left Sikhs worldwide in shock that two prominent Sikh activists who have been integral to the Sikh independence movement abroad have been murdered.
Just days ago UK-based Khalistan advocate Avtar Singh Khanda was allegedly poisoned to death. The Sikh community in the UK has called for a “full investigation” into the death of Khanda, a Khalistan movement leader who mysteriously died in Birmingham last week.
So who murdered Nijjer?
Sikhs took to social media to highlight that killing of the Sikh leader was a political assassination and ongoing conspiracy to silence Sikhs worldwide.
The BC Sikhs facebook group called it an ongoing Genocide of Sikhs following the mass killing of Sikhs in India in the 1980s uprising.
“India is targeting Sikhs in Panjab and eliminating leading Sikh activists throughout the world,” they wrote on Facebook. “This is a coordinated effort. Intelligence agencies and politicians are helpless, if not complicit. Bhai Hardeep Singh was only advocating for freedom. He was shot dead in broad daylight in Surrey on the property of the Gurdwara Sahib. What happened today is an act of war on Sikhs.”
The Indian government had sought Nijjer’s arrest for helping to create and lead the Khalistan movement which had garnered much support over the last 5-10 years. The movement, which included highlighting human rights abuses against Sikhs in India, was started because the Indian government has refused or neglected for years to hold those responsible for the 1984 massacre of Sikhs.
The Indian government sought extradition on this guy but Canadian officials said they wouldn’t grant it because he was simply exercising his democratic rights in a democracy. What he was doing was not illegal in any way.
Another prominent Sikh leader and controversial Air India acquitted suspect Ripudaman Singh Malik was also gunned down last year. During that time, Indian agencies had blamed Nijjer for the murder but he had staunchly denied any involvement in Malik’s killing and Canadian police agencies did not charge or even indicated that Nijjer was a suspect.
The RCMP did arrest two men for Malik’s murder, one of whom was on bail for another murder, but police have not been forthcoming about what the killers said or their motives for killing.
According to DESIBUZZCanada sources, three men allegedly associated with the murder have been arrested but so far police have not confirmed anything.
Surrey RCMP did say in a press release Sunday night that they are on the scene of a homicide following a shooting in the parking lot of a temple at 70 Avenue and 120 Street in Surrey.
On June 18 at approximately 8:27 pm Surrey RCMP were called to a report of a shooting in a parking lot of a temple in the 7000 block of 120th Street. Upon attendance police found an adult male inside a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and provided medical assistance until Emergency Health Services arrived on scene. The man died of his injuries at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called and will be working in partnership with Surrey RCMP. Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase and will be on scene speaking to witnesses and canvassing for any video and physical evidence. At this early stage of the investigation, any possible motives for the shooting are not yet known. Police are still working to determine possible suspect descriptions from multiple witnesses who were in the area.
Surrey RCMP is aware of social media posts that are speculating on the identity of the victim, but are not in a position to confirm the victim’s identity at this very early time.
Further details and media availability will be handled by an IHIT Media Relations Officer.
Anyone with information or dash camera footage from the area is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
