Longtime Vancouver resident Piara Singh Sian passed away peacefully on February 11, 2024. One of 6 siblings, Piara Singh was born on February 1, 1928 in the village of Jagatpur in Punjab, India. On July 12, 1948, he married Gurmit Kaur Bhogal and together they had 8 sons. In 1981, Piara Singh made the decision to move to Canada and settled in South Vancouver, where he remained until his death.
He will be remembered for his gruff exterior that hid a gentle, warm personality, often giggling when he found something funny or entertaining. He was strict with his diet and had a fixed daily schedule that included drinking haldi milk, rubbing his knees with mustard oil, a dose of The Price is Right, followed by a night cap of The Wheel of Fortune. No week would be complete without a walk or a bus ride to community centres and the Khalsa Diwan Society.
Piara Singh is survived by his sons: Resham (Surjit), Kulwant (Sukhninder), Amrik (Ranjit), Harminder (Gurjit), Shangara (Nisha), and Mukhtiar (Gurmeet); 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous close family members. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gurmit Kaur, in January of 2007.
The Sian family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at St. Vincent’s Hospital who helped Piara Singh in his final days.
A gathering to celebrate Piara Singh’s life will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Riverside Funeral Home & Crematorium.
Antam Sanskar and Bhog ceremony to follow at 5:00pm at Khalsa Diwan Society (Ross Street).
