BURNABY – The Man shot dead on Wednesday has been identified as 34-year-old Shahaib Abasi.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was deployed to Burnaby following a shooting that left Abasi dead.
Just before 5:30 p.m., on September 10, Burnaby RCMP frontline officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired near Still Creek Avenue and Still Creek Drive, in North Burnaby. When police arrived, they located a male victim already deceased.
Approximately 15 minutes later, Burnaby RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a vehicle fire near Nursery Street and Lakefield Drive, in South Burnaby. Investigators are working to determine any links to the shooting.
Investigators believed this to be a targeted incident.
IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation and will continue working with policing partners at the Burnaby RCMP, Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
Investigators say that the victim was known to police and initial information indicates that this shooting was a targeted event, linked to the ongoing BC gang conflict.

In order to further the investigation, IHIT is identifying the victim as 34-year-old Shahaib Abasi. Investigators are working to build a timeline leading up to the death of Abasi.
The burnt vehicle, located after the shooting near Nursery Street and Lakefield Drive, is a white Mitsubishi RVR. Police are asking anyone who may have seen this vehicle in the times before and after the shooting to please speak with police.
IHIT will continue to work with our policing partners with the Burnaby RCMP, IFIS and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC) to understand the circumstances of the homicide.
“The gang landscape is complex and fluid,” says Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi, IHIT Media Relations Officer. “Those responsible for this homicide showed a complete disregard for public safety and as a result of gang violence, tragically, a man’s life was lost.”
Those seeking support are encouraged to reach out to their local Victim Services.
Homicide investigators are looking for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam video or CCTV in either area, Still Creek Avenue and Still Creek Drive, as well as Nursery Street and Lakefield Drive, between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., on September 10.
