Local Music Legend Devinder Singh Hundle Passes Away

Local music legend Devinder Singh Hundle, who for years shaped the local music scene and mentored some great singers who went on to international acclaim, passed away on Wednesday. Hundle was a legendary musician , singer and teacher on July10th at the age of 89 at the Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody, local concert promoter Kamal Sharma wrote on facebook in a tribute post.  “Hundle passing is certainly the end of an era as he was a true music pioneer who imbibed the highest traditions to all his students and certainly will be missed by the entire community,” Sharma said. “Devinder ji made great contributions to the local music scene and you have beautifully summed up his legacy,” said R. Paul Dhillon, journalist and filmmaker and editor-publisher of DESIBUZZCanada. “People like Devinder Singh Hundle should be part of the planned South Asian museum as they are legacy of our community’s long history of art and culture in BC.”

Born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab on December 15th 1935, Hunde moved to Delhi and despite losing his eyesight at a young age , immersed himself to the devotion of classical music. 

He was incredibly gifted musician and brilliantly skilled at playing Harmonium , Violin , Sitar and Tabla and naturally thought of teaching after moving to Vancouver in 1974. 

Under Hundle’s tutelag, many students like Shasha Tirupati, Shivangi Bhayana, Jugpreet Bajwa, Raju Johal and others have shone around the world and many more have benefited over the years . 

Hundle was a regular at Classical and Bollywood concerts and despite his handicap, he was one of the most sought after judges at various music and singing competitions and even helped form the Kala Mandir to groom talented artists in the community.
