An Indo-Canadian man has been charged in the January 1 shooting in Surrey. Criminal Code charges have been approved against 49-year-old Chanchal Badwal following a Surrey Police Service (SPS) investigation into a shooting that took place in the Newton area of Surrey. On January 1 at approximately 11:45 pm, police responded to reports of shots fired inside a home in the area of 140B Street and 59 Avenue, Surrey. SPS members arrived on scene and located an injured male who was transported to hospital with an apparent gunshot wound. That individual was reported to be in stable condition. A second male at the scene was arrested.

SURREY – An Indo-Canadian man has been charged in the January 1 shooting in Surrey.
Criminal Code charges have been approved against 49-year-old Chanchal Badwal following a Surrey Police Service (SPS) investigation into a shooting that took place in the Newton area of Surrey.
On January 1 at approximately 11:45 pm, police responded to reports of shots fired inside a home in the area of 140B Street and 59 Avenue, Surrey. SPS members arrived on scene and located an injured male who was transported to hospital with an apparent gunshot wound. That individual was reported to be in stable condition. A second male at the scene was arrested.

SPS’s Serious Crime Unit (SCU) assumed conduct of the investigation and on January 28, charges were approved by the BC Prosecution Service.
Chanchal Badwal has been charged with the following offences:
*One count of attempted murder, contrary to Section 239(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
*One count of discharge of a firearm with intent to endanger life, contrary to Section 244(1) of the Criminal Code.
*One count of possess a loaded prohibited firearm, contrary to Section 95(1) of the Criminal Code.
*One count assault causing bodily harm, contrary to Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code.
*One count of discharge a prohibited firearm, contrary to Section 244.2(3)(a) of the Criminal Code.
*One count of breach of release order, contrary to Section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code.
Badwal is in custody pending his next appearance in court on February 6.
