LONDON – Well known British Bhangra star Johnny Zee- Taz Stereo Nation (Tarsem Singh Saini) died from liver failure over the weekend at a young age after a stellar career in the music business.
Taz Stereo Nation passed away on April 30 at the age of 54.
According to reports, Taj was suffering from liver failure and it affected his kidneys which he could not survive. Netizens poured their heart out following news of his death and are devastated by his passing.
Taj, whom I interviewed during his visit to Surrey in the early 2000s, was a brilliant songwriter who made a name for himself in the early 1990s as Johnny Zee with his fusion Bhangra beat songs that were all the rage with Punjabi British youngsters. After a successful solo career, he formed Stereo Nation formed in 1996 which furthered his name and success. He is considered a pioneer in cross-cultural Asian-Punjabi fusion music.
He debuted at number one in 1989 with the album Hit the Deck, which spent more than 36 weeks at number one on the UK Asian pop chart. This album was produced by Tom Lowry. During the 1990s and early 2000s, he produced many successful albums. All but two of his albums to date have gone gold, platinum and multi-platinum.
His most successful album to date is Slave II Fusion, released in 2000 and featuring some of his best known hits, including “Pyar Ho Gaya”, “Nachenge Saari Raat” and “Gallan Gorian”. His music videos also feature the actor before he became famous. His video “Ishq” features model and actress Koena Mitra
In 2007, he made his film debut with “Don’t Stop Dreaming”, for which he also composed the soundtrack and provided backing vocals. In 2008, he returned with his new album Jawani on the Rocks. His hit singles from the album included “Meri Nazron Mein Tu Hain” and “Hai Hai Jawani”.
In 2010, he released his album Twist & Shout, which was a success. The 2020 single “Galan Goriyan” starring Dhvani Bhanushali, a remake of the 2000 hit, has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube.
