MUMBAI – Bollywood’s biggest stars Shahrukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor helped Indian box office shine with their films Jawan-Pathaan and Animal with third highest revenue worldwide in 2023.
India saw the third highest box office collection with around $1.5 billion (12,400 cr) behind only US / Canada and China. The business was almost 20% up from 2022 but there was much higher growth in Hindi cinema due to some huge blockbusters.
Last year had seen the overall business driven by films from the South but this year it was Hindi cinema which will form around 43% of the all India business when it was only 30% (this is taking out the dubbed films from South) in 2022. It is still well short of the 60-65% business Hindi cinema had before the advent of video but those days will never come back and 40% plus is a huge market share in terms of business today though it will be hard to maintain.
The share was around 45% before the pandemic in 2019 also so we can say the status was back to normal in 2023 but as mentioned above the issue is maintaining this and if Hindi cinema can be around 40% of the all India market share it will mean it is a healthy state as far as the box office goes. The top fifteen collecting nations across the world in 2023 were as follows.
1. US / Canada – $9.07 billion (75,300 cr)
2. China – $7.71 billion (64,000 cr)
3. India – $1.50 billion (12,400 cr)
4. Japan – $1.48 billion (12,275 cr)
5. UK / Ireland – $1.36 billion (11,290 cr)
6. France – $1.35 billion (11,200 cr)
6. Germany – $1.01 billion (8400 cr)
8. South Korea – $0.97 (8050 cr)
9. Mexico – $0.94 billion (7800 cr)
