SURREY – Drugs were a factor in a fatal weekend accident that killed one person in Surrey.

The Surrey RCMP said Monday that impairment by drugs is believed to be a contributing factor in a fatal collision that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on the weekend.

On Saturday, October 5 at approximately 4:30 pm, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a fatal motor vehicle collision near 144 Street and Hyland Drive.  A Ford F350 was travelling northbound on 144 Street when it crossed into oncoming traffic. The vehicle then collided with a bus stop bench injuring two pedestrians and causing damage to the surrounding property.

One male pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene and a second male pedestrian was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver, a 44-year-old man, was arrested on scene for the following offences:

*Dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death

*Impaired operation of a conveyance causing death

“The driver was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and was released from police custody pending further investigation,” say Sergeant Tammy Lobb, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer. “The Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) took conduct of this investigation and impairment by drugs is believed to be a contributing factor in this fatal collision”, added Sgt. Lobb.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
